What are Rotary Switches?

2024-03-28

Rotary Switches, activated by rotating an actuator, become the preferred choice when a device requires selection between two or more positions to engage various electrical circuits. Offering the capability to pause at multiple positions, Rotary Switches facilitate the control of numerous circuits using a single switch. They are typically equipped with either shorting (make before break) or non-shorting (break before make) contacts.

The benefits of Rotary Switches stem from their capacity to manage multiple circuits without the complexity of employing numerous switches. While their usage has diminished over time, Rotary Switches remain prevalent in diverse applications, from CB radios and industrial controls to electronic instruments and aircraft systems.

Rotary Switches may also integrate a detent mechanism, producing an audible "click" and maintaining stability between active positions, avoiding lingering in intermediate states.
